When World War II ended, the 38 hectares of the site became home to a French Army barracks. For almost 60 years, Vauban's military designation precluded it from urban development. After the French Armed Forces in Germany (FFA) vacated the site in 1992, the Freiburg city authorities decided to create a new residential district for 5,000rnpeople in 1993. Just one year later, in 1994, an urban-development competition was held.
