摘要

In 2005 a study was made to restructure the public transport system in Kaunas by 2010. The output was an implementation plan aiming to develop a new trolleybus-based public transport system on nine trunk routes covering all parts of Kaunas. Trolleybuses were chosen as the backbone of the service for their energy efficiency, energy flexibility (electricity can be made in a number of different ways), zero emissions, structuring effect on city planning and the high level of trolleybus knowledge in Kaunas. If on-street priority is as good as for trams, trolleybuses can be considered as a cost-efficient alternative. The new system will be operationally more efficient and cost effective. In addition to these savings from increased efficiency, funding from European structural funds and EBRD (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development) loans have been secured.
