By a fortunate twist of the calendar, we are actually finalising this issue of Public Transport International on human resources immediately upon our return from Nuremberg, where the metro automation conference has just been held. The Nuremberg network is the first to be converting its conventional network entirely over to automed operations. Staff redeployment was widely discussed, of course, at the conference. The question takes on particular importance for metro companies since the Operations Subcommittee of the Metro Division addressed this very topic in a specific Core Brief, entitled "More efficient management of Metro operating personnel". The core brief outlines the existing possibilities for valorising certain activities following the introduction of new technologies.
