The Oresund sound has provided a distinct boundary between Sweden and Denmark for more than 300 years. Before the peace treaty in Roskilde in 1658, both sides of the sound belonged to Denmark. Contacts over 0resund have gradually increased, although the real breakthrough came when the new bridge opened in the summer of 2000. This in turn has implied that Copenhagen's international airport, Kastrup, has taken on an increasingly important role as a point of departure - not only for Danish travellers but also for people living in southern Sweden. There used to be flights between Malmoe and Copenhagen. It was probably one of the world's shortest international flights because the distance between the two airports is less than 40 kilometres. But it is travel time that counts, and the journey by bus and ferry was very time-consuming.
