The CUTE (Clean Urban Transport for Europe) project started in November 2001. It was initiated by DaimlerChrysler - Evobus and is supported by the EU. Some mo11ths earlier, in March 2001, another project - ECTOS (Ecological City Transport System) - had been launched in Reykjavik. The nine European cities taking part in CUTE are Amsterdam, Barcelona, Hamburg, London, Luxembourg, Madrid, Porto, Stockholm, and Stuttgart. Chosen from a much larger number of Interested cities, these nine candidates were finally selected on the basis of their geographical and topographical diversity, as well as their technical ability to tackle such a technologically advanced project Each of these cities, as well as the city of Reykjavik, has bought 3 DaimlerChrysler - Evobus Citato - buses with Ballard fuel cells. In August 2004 the city of Perth in Western Australia will also receive three DaimlerChrysler fuel cell buses as part of the STEP (Sustainable Transport Energy for Perth) project (see next article). These 11 cities are regrouped in the Fuel Cell Bus Club. The experience gained by the members of this Club up until the first quarter of 2004 forms the subject of the present article.
