The cliche, "Everything old is new again", describes the fuel cell, a relatively old technology receiving a fresh boost today as a clean, efficient transportation solution. The technology discovered in the early 1800s by Sir William Grove is receiving enormous attention and investment as a new propulsion system that can lessen the impact of transportation on the environment. The transportation fuel cells of today are much improved. They have become more efficient, more compact, and take advantage of major advancements in automo-tive electronics over the past 40 years. These improvements in the fuel cell system have come about in part as a result of lessons learned through demonstrations, particularly of fuel cell buses. Transport vehicles are an ideal test bed for new technologies: they are centrally fueled and maintained, operate on fixed routes, can more easily accommodate the size and weight of new technologies, have high public visibility, and are supported by govern- ment funding. For this reason, transport applications are favoured by fuel cell manufacturers as a prime venue for learning.
