If we want to glimpse what the future holds in store for public transport in Latin American towns and cities we should first look back at the way in which it has evolved this century. The early years of the 20th cen- tury were marked by the rapid expansion of the tramway system, which peaked with the crisis of 1929. However, by 1950 the tram network had all but disap- Peared. Only a few minor lines remain in operation in Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro and Asuncion.
