Research in the field of molecular microwave spectros-copy blossomed in the decade after World War II. Pioneering activities in this area led to the realization of the ammonia molecular beam maser by Gordon, Zeiger, and Townes in 1954. Independent research efforts on the ammonia beam maser by Basov and Prokhorov are described in the presentation by Manenkov.
