Why do librarians need a critical approach to information technology (IT)? The answers to this question, posed by John Buschman in his introduction to this collection of 12 essays, may be obvious to some but are nevertheless worth restating here. As Buschman argues, contemporary libraries have a huge investment, both financially and man-agerially, in IT, to the extent that demands to drive libraries towards a digital future are considered self-evident, natural and progressive. However, the impact of IT on the library has not been unproblematic. Far from underpinning libraries' centrality in the so-called information society, informa-tization has arguably dislocated them,'banishing them to the margins of an information landscape now dominated by the Internet.
