摘要

Those who monitor American affairs wijl know that Glenn Beck, via his Fox News soap box, recerttly persuaded Tea Party zealots that 'social justice' is code for 'communism' and 'Nazism'. At the same time the Con-Dem Government in Britain threatens to undermine social justice and widen inequalities through what a Harvard economist described as 'wildly unnecessary, misguided, doctrinaire and potentially dangerous spending cuts' (Blanchflower, 2010). These will affect the life chances of all but especially those of the poor and disadvantaged. It is therefore an apposite if challenging time for public librarians on both sides of the Atlantic to consider the needs of people who will suffer the most as a result of these destructive ideologies.
