The characteristics of a smartwatch impose several challengesregardig the design of a pedestrian navigation aid. This paperillustrates how landmark-based pedestrian navigation systemsfor smartwatches can be developed, considering the smallscreen sizes as well as the very limited interaction capacities ofthese wrist-worn devices. Particularly, by the use of a usercentreddesign approach, an initial user interface was developed,tested, and refined in two field experiments to createa final user interface. A combination of map view and directionview was proposed, where the map view provides an overviewof the environment and route, while the direction view givesclear instructions (turning information) for decision points. Theinterface was further enhanced by the use of vibrations beforedecision points. In addition, landmarks were carefully consideredand incorporated into both map view and direction view. Thefield experiments showed that these key features of the revisedinterface can effectively support pedestrian navigation viasmartwatches.
