Droplet transfer and weld formation of MIG welding with Ar-He alternating gas for aluminum alloy

Alternately supplying shielding gas of Ar and He was used in MIG welding of 5A06 aluminum alloy. Arc electrical properties and droplet transfers under different flow rate ratio and flow time ratio were investigated. The welding current fluctuated as the shielding gas was alternately supplied. The droplet transfer mode was alternating, and when the Ar was supplied, the transfer mode was globular, while it was short-circuiting when the He was supplied. As the flow rate or flow time of He increased, the short-circuiting transfer counts increased. The weld penetration profiles were observed, and both the droplet transfer mode and the arc heat transfer characteristics affected it, which led to its non-monotonic change.
