摘要

Map cataloger and librarian Gwen Curtis, of the University of Kentucky, passed away on Sunday, December l6th, 2018 (Figure 1). Born in Lexington, Kentucky to a military family, Gwen's early years were spent on the road as her family moved from post to post, living in places as diverse as Alaska, Texas, and Louisiana. Her family returned to Lexington in 1963, and she graduated in 1969 from Bryan Station High School. Gwen then matriculated to the University of Kentucky where she began studying fine art. As part of her art education, she enrolled in a cartography class offered in the geography department—this enrollment would prove to be important preparation for her future career. In 1970, she began to work in the serials department at the University of Kentucky Libraries as a student worker, before dropping out her junior year to take a full-time position with the library. A year later she would transfer from serials to the newly established map collection, serving as the map cataloger and assistant librarian. Later she would remark that she was the only candidate who had completed a cartography course, putting her at the front of the hiring line.
