摘要

Naval historians of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic era have no difficulty in learning what senior officers thought about particular events or topics. Nelson, Collingwood, Keith, St Vincent, Saumarez, Hood, Markham, and Barham all have volumes of letters, both official and private, published by the Navy Records Society, and many others have Victorian biographies with extensive transcriptions of their correspondence. We are overflowing with letters of senior officers in the wars with France. We are not, however, overflowing with letters of ordinary sailors in the wars with France. As Helen Watt and Anne Hawkins demonstrate in their valuable volume, we probably should be: they estimate that nearly two-thirds of the lower deck were literate, and if sailors wrote home at a rate of about four or five letters per year (an estimate they derive from the letters in their collection), then there should be literally millions of letters from seamen. There are not, of course, in large part because most have not survived. Watt and Hawkins have therefore done a service to the historians of the period by uncovering and transcribing 255 letters.
