摘要

The social and economic history of maritime communities is increasingly dominated by discussion of networks and letter-writing. This is particularly true of the transatlantic British world in the early modern period and long eighteenth century. Historians like Sarah Pearsall have considered the role of familiar letters in crafting identities which defy national or historical boundaries. Others such as Sheryllynne Haggerty have considered the transatlantic trade networks of those for whom large letter collections do not survive but who also relied on widespread epistolary connections. Historians are inclined to claim that their period saw the communication revolution which galvanised a fluid, interconnected world of correspondents. The birth of the British postal service, the frequent changes and attempts to formalise packet ship routes and growing rates of literacy in sections of the female and non-elite population are common areas of investigation. Many broader histories which deal principally with letters inevitably include a summation of these factors to contextualise the contemporary value of letters, as well as their value as historical sources. Increasingly, discussion in the history of letter-writing has shifted towards considering this social dimension and Lindsay O'Neill's The opened letter continues the trend. Her work also provides an effective methodological framework for interrogating letters in the context of writers' wider networks.
