We have been very fortunate in the number of recent publications which have clarified the logistical developments that made possible the success of the British way of warfare in the long eighteenth century. Without the ability to transport, disembark, supply, protect, reinforce and where necessary evacuate its small military strike force, British maritime expeditionary warfare would have drained into the sands as did that of its rivals.
