摘要

The Welsh nation generates any number of stereotypes in the popular imagination. For many, it is a land of rugged mountains, Celtic druids and neo-romantic poetry; more recently, the mind might wander to the smooth baritone of Tom Jones or the (occasional) prowess of the Welsh rugby team. Whatever the association, Wales's renown remains firmly fixed in its terrestrial geography and on land-based pursuits. Rarely, if ever, is it considered a 'maritime nation'. As someone who grew up in a small Welsh seaside town, this has always surprised me: Wales is, after all, surrounded by water on three sides, while the view from even the highest mountain inevitably leads the eye towards the vast expanses of water to the north, west and south of the country. Nonetheless, it is the terrestrial border with England which has dominated Welsh history. Across this frontier came invasions, resources, commerce, ideas and people, and it is these movements that have dominated the work of the many scholars who have analysed the history of the Welsh nation. Its engagement with the sea therefore remains neglected, and often ignored, and so we must be thankful for this authoritative new book by J. David Davies. Wales, he argues, is and was a maritime nation and also a naval one. Naval warfare, he contends, has been central to Welsh history, deciding the fate of the nation on frequent occasions and also shaping its society, culture and identity. This remains a history largely unknown to academics and the public, however, and Britannia's dragon is therefore something new and distinctive: the first naval history of Wales ever written.

David Davies)
