It is fine timing on the part of the author that this study emerges amid two significant Strategic Defence and Security Reviews (SDSRs 2011 and 2015) for Britain's armed forces. While this book is primarily a history, and an important scholarly contribution in itself, it becomes even more interesting when considered within the present-day context, by shedding light on the roots of many political trends that continue to influence Britain's strategic planning. Using recently released official documents from the National Archives for the first time, Hampshire revisits the Labour Government's decision in the late 1960s to cancel a new class of aircraft carrier for the Royal Navy, CVA-01. In the process he seeks to present 'a more nuanced and rounded assessment of the reasons for the cancellation of the carrier and the testing of the [Eric] Grove, [Philip] Pugh and [Paul] Kennedy theses' that did not benefit from these primary sources. His larger aim is to analyse 'the process by which the leadership of the Royal Navy negotiated its greatest crisis of self-confidence in the postwar period, and the most significant reorientation in British naval strategy since the start of the Cold War'. The book is thus structured around three major questions. First, why was CVA-01 cancelled? Second, how did the naval leadership react, adapt and evolve after the cancellation of the carrier programme? And, third, did the changes of 1964-70 result in a Royal Navy focused on the eastern Atlantic NATO mission?
