摘要

The Baltic Sea is not a region of the world associated with the activities of the Royal Navy. In many ways this is unsurprising: for a period of 74 years between 1727 and 1801, for instance, not a single British naval vessel entered the Baltic, which might indicate that the area was not of strategic or tactical importance to the British. However, in John D. Grainger's new book The British Navy in the Baltic we learn that this assumption is misleading, and that the Baltic was frequently, if not permanently, an important area both for the Royal Navy and the British nation throughout their respective histories. On numerous occasion naval fleets were sent to the region to intervene in European disputes - sometimes when invited by Baltic nations but often not - while Britain's need for the naval stores such as hemp, tar and timber, found in abundance in the region, meant access to the Baltic was a constant issue for successive British governments.
