On a blustery April morning in 1960, this reviewer, then at primary school, witnessed his first ship launch. Christened Arlanza by Lady Dorothy Macmillan, wife of serving British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, the white-hulled liner moved gracefully down the ways from Harland & Wolff's premier yard in East Belfast. As the small fleet of steam tugs closed in to take control, severe gusts caught the high sides of the Arlanza's hull and threatened to drive it towards the other slipways. Close to the young witness, an ancient traction engine attempted to haul a wire cable from ship to shore but was itself dragged backwards towards the water. Its hind wheels arrested by the kerb, the mechanical beast reared alarmingly. Only after an hour did the tugs gain the upper hand. Little did I know then that the Arlanza would be both the last new-build for the Royal Mail Lines and the final liner launch at Harland & Wolff.
