摘要

Nathanial Bowditch is a historical figure very much in need of a biography. A richly researched volume, this work covers the entirety of Bowditch's life from the 1770s to 1838. With Bow-ditch's career as a lens, Thornton's work provides a new perspective on the interrelated worlds of business and scientific thought in the turbulent period between the American Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Bowditch was born into an impoverished, yet socially established family. With a father reduced to running a cooperage, Bowditch used family connections to gain access to libraries containing texts on science, navigation and language while working as a bookkeeper for a ship chandler. Bowditch eventually earnt a place as a supercargo on a series of voyages from 1795 and returning to Salam in 1803 he successfully transitioned into the business world. He eventually relocated from Salam to Boston and started working as an actuary and directing several trust funds. Bowditch produced two significant publications, first The American practical navigator in 1802, which went on to become the standard issue text for American merchant sailors. Secondly, Bowditch translated the first four volumes of Pierre-Simon de Laplace's Mecanique celeste. The translation was complete by around 1818, but unwilling to use public funds to publish such a theoretical text, Bowditch instead focused on expanding his commentary, almost doubling the length of Laplace's original work. It was finally publish during the last decade of Bowditch's life 1829-1839.
