摘要

In his History of the Peloponnesian War, one of the earliest scholarly works of history, Thucy-dides recorded and analysed the naval battles between the Greek city-states and their adversaries in the Eastern Mediterranean. Naval history, it is safe to say, has been with us since the beginning of historical study. Moreover, it has always been more complex than simple narratives of vessels fighting against one another for superiority on the seas. As Richard Harding put it in his latest book Modern naval history, 'naval history cannot be understood unless the multiple contexts in which navies are constructed and put to sea are also understood' (1). As N.A.M. Rodger has pointed out, understanding warfare at sea thus requires an engagement with political, social, economic, diplomatic, technological, administrative, agricultural, medical, religious and other aspects of history, which themselves cannot be complete without understanding the naval component. The study of naval history, therefore, has relevance in virtually every corner of the mother discipline.
