British maritime history has a curious lack of high-quality regional studies. There are excellent studies of individual ports, mainly the major trading ports, and some equally excellent surveys of the country as a whole, but coverage of maritime history at a regional and county level is patchy. For the south-west there have been comprehensive, multi-author studies of Devon and, more recently, Somerset, but Cornwall was a glaring omission until 2014, when after a long period in gestation The maritime history of Cornwall finally saw the light of day.
