This new book by James Falkner has as its cover an evocative colour image of the attack on the galleons in Vigo Bay in 1702. The publisher's blurb declares it to be a 'major new study of the war that shaped eighteenth century Europe' and 'the first comprehensive history of the war to be published for ninety years'. However, anyone interested in this fascinating subject would expect much more than they find between the covers of the dust jacket. Falkner has written a dozen studies on Marlborough's military campaigns and the period of the War of the Spanish Succession. He excels, as he does in this book, with succinct and clearly written descriptions of military operations, and diplomacy. One must welcome this book, as we should for any study that can bring renewed and broader interest to this subject, but from the point of view of new research and scholarship there is much lacking. While what is written is clearly stated, there is not too much here that could not have been written 40 or 50 years ago.
