This is a welcome book on the career of an extraordinary British shipwright, Samuel Bentham, and his time in Russia, primarily during the 1780s. Samuel was the brother of the more well-known political philosopher and prison reformer, Jeremy Bentham, who also spent some time visiting his brother in Russia. Roger Morriss is not the first to work on Samuel's life and, specifically, his time in Russia but it is fair to say this is the most detailed survey to date of his time in this country. The book could quite easily have been promoted as a calendar or diary of Samuel's experience in his own words - something hinted at by Morriss early on (xiv) - since much of it directly quotes his letters and reports. One reason for Samuel's relative neglect is the appalling nature of his hand writing, which is extremely hard to read and has a tendency toward torturous long sentences. As such the author should be applauded for deciphering and making public these primary sources.
