John Secker is, I suspect, not a name that comes readily to mind. Born the son of a Quaker miller from North Walsham in Norfolk, Seeker followed what some might regard as a largely unexceptional seafaring career, albeit one that took in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Arabia and India. As Andrew Hopper points in his introduction, however, this is the value of Seeker's narrative, which offers 'a rare glimpse of what a middling-sort, trading man from Norfolk made of the wider world' (21). As Hopper notes, 'Britain relied upon its John Seckers just as much as its Horatio Nelsons' (22).
