Thin books are often attractive; they suggest a distilled version of events - all you need to know to get through the looming seminar - easy and quick to digest, perhaps even lightweight. J.J. Widen's Theorist of maritime strategy may well be thin, but it is certainly not lightweight. Instead, in its 179 pages it presents deep analysis and thought about what Sir Julian Corbett said about maritime strategy and what might have influenced him to write what he did. This emphasis on the theoretical means that readers hoping for a detailed biography of Corbett's life and historical writings will be disappointed, although Widen quite rightly draws attention to these aspects where they have a bearing on his theoretical output. Those wishing to immerse themselves in Corbett's life and historical writing should read Donald Mackenzie Schurman's excellent works, and I think Widen is quite right not only to leave this area untouched but also to refer interested readers to Schurman.
