As much as it concerns itself with the War of 1812, The challenge is about historiography. Lambert argues that our understanding of this conflict has been at best partial; certain elements emphasised and others ignored according to political context. The challenge addresses not so much a gap in the historiography, but the myth-making that has characterised many American interpretations of this conflict. This has led to the War of 1812 frequently being portrayed as an American victory; a conclusion that Lambert is very keen to challenge. Yet at the bicentenary of this conflict, he reflects that, 'At this remove it matters little who "won" the War of 1812, what matters is that we recognise the fluid, endlessly contested nature of the past as a cultural construction' (449).
