The period of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms is one of the most researched in the history of the British Isles. It is thus astonishing that the maritime aspects of these conflicts have yet received comparatively little attention by scholars. Elaine Murphy has set out to fill at least some parts of these gaps with two important contributions addressing the war at sea around the Irish coasts. Murphy's monograph Ireland and the war at sea, 1641-1653 is a detailed study of the maritime dimension of the Irish Confederate wars. Although the Irish seas did not see any major naval battles - which Murphy identifies as one reason why this particular topic has received only brief attention by historians - her study demonstrates that war was waged heavily on the waters around Ireland. In the introduction, she points out that the central concern of her study is 'to integrate warfare at sea into the wider context of political, military and economic developments in Ireland, England and Scotland' (2), and it is indeed one of the strongest features of her work to reveal in detail how deeply combat at sea was intertwined with military campaigns and political turbulence ashore.
