In October 1805, two massive fleets met off the south-west coast of Spain for what became the best known and most celebrated naval battle in the history of the Atlantic World. In 2005, Britain celebrated the bicentennial of the Battle of Trafalgar as though the original dispatches had just arrived announcing the victory two centuries earlier. Festivities included the largest fleet review in modern times, re-enactments of the Battle of Trafalgar, as well as ceremonies at St Paul's Cathedral and in Trafalgar Square. The 12 months leading up to the anniversary witnessed a surge in publications. Biographies of Nelson and his subordinates, books that detailed the construction and history of the ships present at the battle, as well as new studies of the Battle of Trafalgar itself and its implications all flooded onto popular and academic bookshelves. Furthermore, the events that surrounded the 200th anniversary fuelled a new interest in eighteenth-century naval history, which is still going strong today with continued publications appearing faster than any individual can possibly read them.
