Historians may be sceptical of anniversaries and the publications that they tend to bring, but there is something virtuous in how a celebration functions like a magnet to different disciplines. This volume is evidence of just such a phenomenon. In marking the centenary of the 1906 launch of HMS Dreadnought, the editors attracted a group of historians working on the navy, Anglo-German relations, technology and British social, cultural, political and economic history, who may otherwise never have joined into a dialogue. This array of intellectual perspectives is particularly welcome given that the common object of study is not a person, group or event, but a technological artefact. Technologies and technological systems like the Dreadnought can too often appear in historical narratives as mere cogs in more popular grand narratives. An edited volume such as this, which locates the Dreadnought within symbolic, political, diplomatic, social, cultural, technical and operational settings, only serves to underline that technologies are rich in meaning and significance established through historically contingent episodes. The Dreadnought, like many ships throughout British history, meant many things to many people. Perhaps the most important contribution that this study offers to our understanding of the Dreadnought is precisely how different groups of historical actors, from admirals and diplomats to suffragists and artists, established meaning for the Dreadnought.
