摘要

The articles in this section represent work presented to a symposium held at the National Maritime Museum in April 2014 entitled 'Gendering the Maritime World, 1600-1950'. Maritime history has long since shifted from being a self-contained study of a watery world. Rather, over the past generation, scholars have sought to explain the numerous ways in which maritime life interacts with and informs broader social, economic, political and, especially, cultural trends. As a result, there has been a clear shift from seeing maritime affairs as separate and separable, to a growing awareness of their complex relationships with wider historical processes. The bridge that this has built between ship and shore has transformed the subject, promoting a two-way traffic of primary sources, methodologies and historiographies. One of the most significant recent developments has been the influence of broader histories of gender on this field and the following articles reflect this latest sweep of scholarship. Gender history aims to unveil the socially constructed and contingent negotiations of power embedded in femininities and masculinities, which intermingle with other categories of identity formation - personal and collective -such as nationhood, class and age. The application of these analytical techniques to maritime history offers rich opportunities not only to rewrite the histories of maritime societies, but perhaps also to challenge the broader social and cultural narratives that have often disregarded maritime themes.
