This companion volume has ambitious aims. Principal among these is a desire to carry Atlantic history 'beyond its formative stages toward intellectual maturity' (ⅷ). Over the past three decades, the evolution of a distinctively 'Atlantic' approach has been one of the most striking developments in our understanding of historical change in the Americas, Africa and Europe. This historiographical phenomenon has provided scholars with the intellectual tools and analytical space to explore a range of interactions and connections that characterised the region between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. It brings together a diversity of topics and themes - from maritime exploration and commercial engagement to migration, colonisation, and political and revolutionary upheaval - to inform and advance our understanding of this maritime space. It is a framework in which a variety of social interactions, cultural exchanges and even the circulation of biota can be accommodated and assessed for their impact and influence on people and places. This is not to say that Atlantic history is without its limitations and weaknesses. Nevertheless, its success as a tool of historical analysis is undeniable and borne out by the number of monographs and journals, undergraduate modules and postgraduate programmes that draw on its basic methodological and analytical agendas. This Princeton companion will undoubtedly contribute to this and make Atlantic history a more securely grounded phenomenon for the students and scholars at which it is aimed.
