Erica Charters' recent monograph - Disease, war and the imperial state: the welfare of the British armed forces during the Seven Years' War - adopts an investigative and interdisciplinary approach to a chain of subjects which have perhaps traditionally been thought of in more exclusive terms in eighteenth-century studies. Focusing on the period 1756-63, but with an astute understanding of how historical campaigns of the previous decades shaped these events, her relatively short book takes on an impressive range of medical, political, military and naval historical debates, with a nod to the burgeoning influence of public opinion and the print press. At the centre of Charters' work is a discussion of how growing public concern for the welfare of the armed forces during the period was not only central to changing the ways that military campaigns were executed, but also in shaping the development of scientific knowledge itself. Although the Seven Years' War is frequently represented as the 'first world war', Charters notes that relatively few studies have attempted to analyse its impact on British troops' welfare on an inter-continental scale, and sets out in the introduction her intentions to redress that imbalance (9).
