The Battle of Britain was a curious battle. The received wisdom is that it was fought between the Royal Air Force and (predominantly) the Luftwaffe largely over southern England, although the Italian Regia Aeronautica made a brief and ill-starred appearance and there was some fighting further north. The result was a defeat for the Luftwaffe, following which it bombed London and other major cities by night, largely unchallenged by the Royal Air Force, for nearly six months. However, the battle itself stopped the Wehrmacht from invading England. So much for the received version, which, as the title makes clear, this book does not accept. In reality the German Navy knew from the outset - even before France had fallen - that an invasion was impossible, while the German army had major doubts about its practicability. The Royal Navy, having destroyed or severely damaged most of the German navy during the Norwegian campaign knew it could not be done, so much so that the Commander-in-Chief of the Home Fleet told the Prime Minister Winston Churchill that it saw no need to send his capital ships south of Harwich. Churchill did not demur. After the fall of France, he had talked up the forthcoming battle, anticipating and warning of a German invasion and in the process making speeches that have rightly become world famous. However, his public and private faces seemed to be very different. Within Whitehall it was almost as if he did not believe invasion was probable or likely.
