New York Times journalist Carlotta Gall covered Afghanistan on the ground from November 2001 to 2011. This hard-earned, grassroots-level perspective lends great credibility to The Wrong Enemy, her largely chronological account of the war there. (The book takes its title from former US Ambassador Richard Holbrooke's summation: 'We may be fighting the wrong enemy in the wrong country' [p. 222].) While US and other Western policymakers tried from a significant cultural distance to reason their way toward sound strategy and tactics for rebuilding Afghanistan after routing the Taliban, Gall formed her visceral insights at close range. Through constant observations around the country and interviews with Afghans from all social strata, she came to realize the primary source of Afghanistan's woes: Pakistan's support of al-Qaeda and the Taliban out of desire to maintain Afghanistan as a buffer zone on its western flank against potential destabilization or even invasion.
