摘要

What It Is Like to Go to War provides an excellent journal of a young marine lieutenant's experience as a combat platoon leader in Vietnam. Marlantes, a Princeton graduate and former Rhodes Scholar, bares his soul and highlights the raw- emotions and intimate feelings that combat can induce. He writes about the 'psychological, spiritual, and moral stresses of combat' with acute candor and keen insight. Returning combat veterans of past wars have hidden these feelings from friends, family members, spouses, and children, often taking them to their grave. Even my own father was elusive when asked about his combat experience in the Philippines, during World War Ⅱ.
