THE EDUCATIONAL INEQUALITY OF BUDDHIST MONKS AND NOVICES IN THAILAND

摘要

This research was carried out in order to survey the educational inequality of Thai Buddhist monks and novices in the Thai Sangha Order and to clarify the role of Buddhist Universities. Data were collected through both primary and secondary relevant documents, questionnaires and interviews. The results showed that the inequitable budget allotment and the disparity in educational system and curricula are the main causes of this inequality, which then results in poor quality of teaching, lack of qualified teachers, lack of schools and teaching facilities and so on. The majority of the Religious Affairs Department officials with the exception of some seniof monks are in favour of educational reform as the young monks and novices so earnestly desire. Questionnaire respondents and interviewees who are officials of the Religious Affairs Department show their quite positive attitudes towards the present role of Buddhist Universities and their contribution to society.
