When Tim Yoshino was elected to be president, it was not by a hanging chad. It was to honor him for his amazing achievementsnin research and education, his contribution to our society,nand to bring his leadership experience to the presidency. He hasnbeen the right person at the right time.nHis research efforts have produced, in total, more than 100npeer-reviewed articles, chapters in books, and published symposia.nThis work has been funded, in part, by more than 7nmillion dollars in extramural grants and fellowships. During thenpast 25 yr, he has served as an ad hoc reviewer and in studynsections for NIH, NSF, TMP, NIAID, USDA, and Sea Grant.nTim has made a considerable contribution to his professionalnorganizations and societies. For ASP, he has served on morenthan a dozen different committees and organizing chair positions.nIn addition to being an associate editor for the Journalnof Parasitology, he has served as associate editor on the editorialnboard of five other journals. He also has served as annexternal examiner for students in 4 foreign countries.nTim’s commitment to education is equally as impressive. Hisnlaboratories have been fruitful, and his students have continuednto be productive. To date, he has mentored 6 M.S. and 10 Ph.D.nstudents and 9 postdoctoral scholars. Tim also has a strongncommitment to the recruitment and training of underrepresentednminority students into the sciences. He is active in the researchnprograms at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) fornundergraduates and high school students. Tim is currently directornand principle investigator for the NIH Cellular & MolecularnParasitological Training Grant Program and chair, Departmentnof Animal Health and Biomedical Sciences, UW.nIn recognition of his excellence in teaching, research, andnservice to his profession, Tim has received numerous awards:nHenry Baldwin Medal, ASP; Pfizer Award for Research Excellence;nWalter F. Rank Distinguished Professor Award, Vet &nMed School, UW, Career Development Awards, NIH andnNIAID and various Research and Teaching Awards from thenUniversity of Oklahoma-Norman.
