It is with sadness I report that on 15 July 2004, at the age of 79, Dr. Paul H. Silverman died from complications following a bone marrow replacement procedure at the University of California-Irvine Medical Center. Born in Minneapolis, Dr. Silverman attended the University of Minnesota, graduating from Roosevelt University. He obtained his Master's degree in parasitology and ecology from Northwestern University in 1950. His Ph.D. and D.Sc. were both earned at the University of Liverpool in England, the former in 1955 and the latter in 1968. He was variously a faculty member or senior administrator at the University of Illinois, University of New Mexico, State University of New York, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, University of California-Berkeley, and University of California-Irvine. His career included research stints at Hebrew University in Israel, University of Liverpool, Moredun Institute in Edinburgh, Glaxo, Ltd. in England, and at several universities in the United States. Active until the very end, Dr. Silverman was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, the author of at least 140 scholarly articles and other publications, and provided extensive service to many scientific organizations. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, and 2 sons.
