James Scott's Decoding subaltern politics: ideology, disguise and resistance in agrarian politics brings together several lines of enquiry concerned with understanding power relations in situations of conflict between dominant and subaltern agents, particularly in the context of agrarian societies. Scott's (1976) earlier work in this area examined how the particularities of peasant experience translate into specific moral and ethical interpretations of the world guided by subsistence, and also how these persist in the face of successive regimes of domination. Violation of this subsistence ethics by the dominating class creates conflict, but resistance is often enacted in a covert manner due to the power asymmetries that characterize relations between elite and subaltern groups. Scott subsequently extended his analysis of hidden conflict and resistance to peasants in multiple regions of the world and other dominated classes (Scott, 1990, 1985).
