The new volume Playgrounds and Battlefields: Critical Perspectives on Social Engagement, published by Tallinn University Press, is organised around two trans-disciplinary goals, 'to broaden the interpretative scope of humanities', and to explore the potential of establishing the 'playground' as an analytic metaphor to 'encapsulate social expressions ... occurring at the time of the analysis' (p. 11). Eclectic in its content and themes, Playgrounds and Battlefields is bound to offer any reader something of interest. The volume as a whole positively brims with energy, bouncing from topic to topic with a refreshing disregard for disciplinary boundaries. Though at times frustrating, this refusal to adhere to a singular perspective presents the reader with an appealingly provocative challenge. Those prepared to accept the challenge will be rewarded with a fresh perspective on the future directions of the humanities.
