In Defence of Lost Causes is a battle cry to the Left in the face of ever-growing political, economic and ecological crisis. In this doorstop of a book, Slavoj Zizek makes a case for returning to the grand narratives of the past, of resurrecting the revolutionary spirit from the ashes of the great revolutionary failures, and confronting and engaging with capitalism and its allies - not least of which, he declares, is democracy. To do so he returns to origins, not only of now defunct ideologies, but also of (post)modern man and proposes what can only be called an ethics of commitment. He sends out a warning to the Left that radical change requires radical confrontation and engagement and charges them with the responsibility of human catastrophe, and the possibility of avoiding it. Zizek is not a reticent man, and this book does not shy from seeking out a strategy and position in the most unlikely of places: totalitarianism and revolutionary terror. Indeed, Zizek takes these 'horrors' as his starting point and embraces the motto appropriated from Samuel Becket: 'Try Again. Fail Again. Fail Better'. However, this book is neither a seamless philosophical position, nor a comprehensive strategy for the Left. This review elucidates Zizek's ethical position and what possibilities it presents to confront capitalism and resuscitate radical democracy.
