摘要

Acknowledging the historical and readily overlooked raison d'etre of formal democracy is critical in the contemporary era of democratization. Despite a popular fixation on democracy's civic virtues, the most powerful democracies have been historically linked to the institution of empire due to the fundamental acquisitive underpinnings that they both share. Given its elemental function as guarantor of individual possession for the common citizenry, the most powerful - and thus successful - democratic states in the international arena have served as 'acquisitive collectives of private property'. It is no surprise that the materially successful and consequently stable democratic states that lead the world system are/have been favorably linked to the structure of imperialism. Any conception of an emerging era of democratic 'peace' must accommodate the coercive imperialism of old modified to suit the era of democratically sponsored globalization. Thus, this article contextualizes the popularly overlooked relationship of the leading democracies and imperialism, and consequently reveals that the growing democratization of the world system of polities in the late twentieth century is the re-inscription of imperialism within a democratic world order.
