Across the Western world democracy is widely celebrated today as the best form of government, and yet - as Lars T?nder and Lasse Thomassen emphasize in their introduction to Radical Democracy: Politics between Abundance and Lack- we live at a time when democracy is also challenged on a number of fronts: from the processes of economic globalization that undermine the 'democratic sovereignty' of the nation state, to the resurgence of terrorist movements that have provoked a new set of security measures that imperil the civil liberties of citizens. In the academy, the question of democracy is at the forefront of normative political discourse, as the liberal-communitarian debate has given way to a range of competing versions of democracy: deliberative democracy, agonistic democracy, and cosmopolitan democracy for example.
