It is with great pride that I present this very special issue on Product Design Research and Practice. The importance of design in the product development process cannot be disputed, yet the academic study of product design has been relatively sparse. To initiate new research streams in this area, Michael Luchs and Scott Swan organized a Young Scholars Conference on Product Design in summer 2009. After a rigorous selection process, the two best papers from that conference were selected for inclusion in this issue. These, and a Perspectives article on
