Contemporary medical technology is unique in its ability to save lives and reduce pain and suffering. It can provide a degree of normality to the lives of those who suffer dysfunctions and an impaired quality of life. Indeed, some products, such as sophisticated medical devices, can be so crucial that the patient faces death without them. As all understand, however, it is not yet possible to deliver these important benefits absolutely free of risk. Congress has recognized these basic facts. Through the MDA, it provided a balanced response to the rapid pace of technological developments in the field of sophisticated medical devices.
