In recent years, activists and scholars have felt compelled to describe the meanings, feelings, histories, philosophies, and even emotions behind a wide range of movements. Although some of these dispatches take shape as journalistic accounts, others are distinct narratives. The result is a literature that combines storytelling, a lineage of movement practices, and a quick and sexy overview of the who, what, when, and how of a given movement. The result is a compelling, ever-expanding literature concerning the processes, policies, motivations, and ideological conflicts of those involved in the work of social change (see Shepard, 2004).
