摘要

In his brilliantly written novel Midnight's Children, Salmon Rushdie (1995) suggests that when you have "city eyes" you overlook the human suffering of the homeless-"the beggars in boxcars don't impinge on you, and the concrete sections of future drainpipes don't look like dormitories" (p. 100). Tragically, it is not only with city eyes that individuals look upon the nearly three million homeless in this country (National Center on Homelessness and Poverty, 2002). Accounts suggest that the homeless have been subjected to various forms of defamation, harassment, vandalism, and assault by those who see them as objects of fear and loathing-by those with "imperial eyes" filled with hate (Wach-holz, 2005).
