This edited book is an outgrowth of the Slavery's Capitalism conference jointly sponsored in 2011 by Brown University and Harvard University. The 16 contributors are distinguished historians at some of the most reputable American institutions. Combined they argue that slavery was a constitutive element in the development of American capitalism. It begins, of course, with exploited labor but moves quickly into finance and mercantile networks beyond American borders.
